The causes of lung cancer
The main risk factor of lung cancer is smoking.
Smoking tobacco causes 8 out of 10 cases of lung cancer. The longer a person smokes and higher is ratio cigarettes/day may increase the risk. If a person stops smoking before lung cancer illness, the lungs gradually recover and again become normal. Quitting smoking is the most effective way to reduce the risk of lung cancer regardless of age and sex. We need always keep in our minds that alternative ways of smoking, such as pipe or cigar, cause the same risk for development of this disease as regular cigarettes do.
Scientists proved how smoking provokes lung cancer and it's because of hydrogen peroxide, which is contained in tobacco smoke. It affects the receptor cells sending them wrong signal for upgrade. As a result they begin their uncontrolled division, which turns into the disease.
It is important to realize as well that even passive smoking can cause lung cancer. People who are non-smokers themselves, but breathing cigarette smoke in the air are at risk too. If there is even one smoker is family, then there is 24% increased risk for non-smokers to develop lung cancer compared to those families in which all members are non-smokers. Well smoker should always realize that he/she is not damaging himself/herself only , but to those whom he/she love too.
The negative effect of tobacco smoke can exacerbate the lack of a diet of vegetables and fruits. It is believed that the use of apples and onions (as well, and many other fruits and vegetables) can reduce risk and protect from the occurrence of lung cancer.
Smoking is the main cause of the disease, but not only. The air of large cities has a lot of industrial and traffic fumes, as well as capable of causing the occurrence of cancer.
Working in the aluminum industry, gasification and coking coal, foundry industry, the production of isopropyl alcohol, rubber industry and mining hematite are considered to be a risk factors for developing lung cancer.
Asbestos is another risk factor for lung cancer. People, who work with asbestos, have an increased risk of developing lung cancer. If they are smokers, the risk increases significantly. Mesothelioma (malignant tumor) associated with asbestos, often developed from the pleura.
Radon is a radioactive gas arising from the natural decay of uranium. Radon can’t be seen, tasted or smelled. Radon can concentrate inside the building and lead to increased risk of cancer.
For substances which cause cancer, include ( but not limited ): uranium, arsenic, vinyl chloride, nickel, coal products, mustard gas, diesel exhaust. People working with these substances should observe caution and safety.
Cannabis. Marijuana contain more tar than conventional cigarettes. In marijuana contains many substances that cause cancer, as well as in cigarettes. There are indications that marijuana can cause cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx.
Tuberculosis and some types of pneumonia often leave scars, these scars may increase the risk of developing lung cancer.
Mineral substances. Talc may increase risk of lung cancer among those who produce it or work with him. People with diseases caused by inhalation of certain minerals, also have an increased risk of lung cancer.
Personal or family history. If a person previously had lung cancer, there is an increased risk that other malignant tumors will appear in the lungs.
Diet. Not using fruits and vegetables may increase the risk of lung cancer in people under the influence of tobacco smoke. It is supposed that the apples, onions and some other fruits and vegetables have a protective effect against lung cancer.
Sex. Some studies have shown that the lungs of women under the influence of tobacco smoke are exposed to malignant degeneration more compared to men.
In recent years achieved great progress in the understanding how risk factors lead to changes in DNA of lung cells, causing them to become malignant. We are hoping that the identified changes in DNA will help to diagnose lung cancer at early stages.
